Bellbird in the Suburbs: A Joyful Sight

It’s been over three years since I last spotted a bellbird (korimako) in our garden, and that sighting was only a brief visit. This morning, I was thrilled to see a male bellbird proudly defending our garden bird feeder, chasing off the other birds with typical territorial behaviour.

Bellbirds are known for their strong territorial instincts, especially around food sources, so I’m hopeful this one will make our garden a regular stop or even a permanent home. With native planting and a well-maintained feeder, we’re creating an inviting space for more New Zealand native birds to thrive.

I took all of these bird photos through my dining room window. Using the house as a hide allows me to photograph birds up close, especially helpful given our small garden space. Over time, the local birds have become accustomed to my presence behind the glass, sitting quietly with a camera.

This morning, the bellbird flew right up to the window, clearly letting me know he’d seen me. After that brief moment of acknowledgment, he paid me no further attention and focused entirely on chasing away any other birds that came near the feeder.

I love hearing the bellbird’s song, it is absolutely beautiful to listen to. You can hear it on the NZBirdsOnline website.

I will be adding more images to the site over the next little bit as I take every opportunity to photograph this stunning little bird with a huge personality. Always love to hear from you, you can send messages using the contact form here.
