Most days we head down to one of the local parks to walk our son’s dog. We have plenty of parks to choose from, so the location may change, but unless the weather is particularly bad, we head out.
While my husband and the dog go for their walk, I have the perfect opportunity to get out my camera and enjoy some bird photography.
Photographing Eastern Rosellas
Different times of the year bring different birds to the parks, and right now the eastern rosellas are dominating the trees. There is one particularly bossy tūī that chases them away from time to time, but for the most part, I am seeing more rosellas at the moment than any other species of bird.
I am certainly not complaining. Although the eastern rosella is not a New Zealand native, its striking colours make it a wonderful subject for photography. Getting close enough for good photographs can be tricky. Eastern rosellas are very skittish and will take flight the moment you get too close. Patience, and keeping a reasonable distance, is often needed to capture a good shot.
Eastern Rosellas in the Totara Trees
These images are all from yesterday’s walk. Most of the birds were feeding on the ground, which isn’t ideal for photography, but I did manage to capture some of them in the totara trees.
The colourful plumage of the eastern rosella really stands out against the greenery, making these beautiful birds a pleasure to photograph whenever I encounter them during my walks.
