We often have kererū visiting the large kōwhai tree at the back of our property. The tree is actually over the fence on our neighbour’s property, so I have never expected to see kererū feeding on the smaller kōwhai trees at the front of our house. That was until today.
I was sitting at my computer when I caught a glimpse of something flapping past my window. When I turned to look, I saw a kererū staring back at me. Of course, the first thing I did was grab my camera and fire off a few shots before positioning myself somewhere better to capture some more photographs.
Photographing the Kererū
The kererū had seen me but didn’t seem particularly worried. My next move was to go out the front door and onto the deck. The bird continued eating the juicy kōwhai leaves, seemingly unconcerned by my presence.
Thinking I already had some great photos, I decided to see if I could find an even better view. I walked around and under the tree, but this still didn’t bother the kererū. Unfortunately, the bird had no plans to give me the perfect view! After a while, I gave up and went back to my computer. However, I continued watching the kererū through the window while I worked.
Lucky to Have Kererū in the Garden
I feel very lucky to have so many native New Zealand birds visiting my front garden. Having a kererū arrive unexpectedly at the kōwhai tree was a wonderful surprise. It was even better to be able to watch it feeding so peacefully and capture some photographs while it was there.
It’s moments like this that remind me how special it is to have native New Zealand birds right outside the house.
