Kōwhai in Bloom: A Haven for Tui and Silvereye Photography

My kōwhai tree is finally in bloom, and it’s alive with colour and sound. The tui and silvereye in the kōwhai tree are making the most of the nectar, creating the perfect opportunity for some beautiful New Zealand bird photography right from my garden. Watching them dart between flowers and perch among the yellow blossoms is such a joy, and each visit brings new photo opportunities.

The red hot pokers are also flowering, giving the silvereyes another favourite feeding spot. It’s been wonderful photographing them up close through the dining room window. Even though they can see me, they seem to know I’m not a threat, allowing me to get within just two metres – a real treat for a bird photographer.

The weather has been unpredictable, so many of these images were captured while it was raining. Look for the droplets on the birds’ feathers, they add a special touch of nature’s artistry that makes each image unique.

If I’m lucky, I’ll have a full month of photographing tui and silvereye feeding on the kōwhai tree as the flowers keep blooming. And if the korimako (New Zealand bellbird) decides to join in, I’ll be thrilled!

With the home renovations finally slowing down and daylight saving providing extra evening light, I’ve been capturing most of these photos after the workday ends, the perfect time for peaceful, golden-hour photography in the garden.

I love this time of year when the tui and silvereye in the kōwhai tree bring the garden to life. Their visits remind me how lucky I am to share this space with such beautiful native birds.
