Honey bee side on

Lavender in bloom

December is the time of year for photographing bees in my garden. It is when my English Lavender is in bloom. I am hoping to see a native New Zealand bee but as yet no such luck. I plan to monitor the lavender each afternoon when the sun is directly on it as that is the best time to see the bees. In this post I have images of the three different species of bees that I photographed yesterday afternoon.

I do enjoy watching the honey bees as they flight about the lavender blooms doing their business. It is very relaxing to watch and they let me get fairly close to them without disturbing their work.

Bumblebees

My garden is full of bumblebees and they have finally found their way to the lavender flowers. The image below has to be one of my all time favourites of a bumblebee. I love the soft muted background and how the flower is isolated with the bumblebee hanging from it.

Wool-carder bees

When I see the wool-carder bees I am taken by their bright yellow colour and the pattern on their backs. They are very easy to identify once you know what they are and they look almost angry when you see them face on.

I will keep trying to find a New Zealand native bee to add to one of my bee blogs. The lavender will be in bloom for a few more weeks yet so keep an eye on my blog posts to see if I find one. Thank you all for the lovely feedback, I love receiving your messages after I send my posts out.
