Yellow-crowned kakariki

Otorohanga Kiwi House

On a recent visit to Auckland, we visited the native New Zealand birds at Otorohanga Kiwi House. Along with kiwi at this park, they have many other native New Zealand birds too. There is a lot of construction happening at the moment and much of the wetlands closed off to the public, but I don’t think we missed too much.

Korimako – bellbird

We found the first walk through aviary that contained kereru, korimako, red-crowned and yellow-crowned kakariki, and a single pied stilt, these birds were happy with people being in their space and I captured some great images of them. The bellbirds were the first to put on a show for the camera.

Kereru – wood pigeon

Kereru bounced about from branch to branch. They are such large birds and can be hard to capture the entire bird in the frame. I decided to concentrate on capturing close up images of its feet and head etc. Kereru are such fun birds to watch, I love photographing the native New Zealand birds at the Otorohanga Kiwi House.

Oh what big feet you have.

Kakariki

The second walk through aviary is huge! Kakariki attracted my attention immediately. I suspect there has been some inter-breeding with the red-crowned and yellow-crowned kakariki as their colours were not as clear as they could be. After spending some time with the kakariki and filling my camera’s memory card, we headed back to Ohaupo to have lunch with some friends.
