On almost every sighting of the big cats with a recent kill, we also encountered spotted hyenas lurking nearby. These intelligent predators would wait patiently in the background, watching for an opportunity to steal a meal from the lions or leopards, or simply move in to clean up once the big cats had finished feeding.
At first glance, the spotted hyenas appeared relaxed and harmless as they quietly circled the area. However, appearances can be deceiving. Spotted hyenas are powerful hunters in their own right and should never be underestimated. They are among Africa’s most successful predators, combining intelligence, strength, and remarkable endurance. Their mottled coat provides excellent camouflage, allowing them to blend effortlessly into the dry grass and bushveld of Sabi Sands. Combined with an exceptional sense of smell, they can quickly locate a kill site from a considerable distance away.
More Than Just Scavengers
Many people think of hyenas purely as scavengers, but they are highly effective hunters. While they will readily take advantage of an easy meal left behind by other predators, they are also capable of bringing down prey themselves.
During our safari drives, we often watched them waiting patiently at a distance while lions or leopards fed. Their persistence frequently paid off, especially when the larger predators moved away and left scraps behind.
A Threat to Young Cubs
Spotted hyenas can also pose a serious threat to young predator cubs. Our guides shared stories about one of the leopard females we photographed during our stay. Unlike many leopards, she rarely dragged her kills into trees for safekeeping.
As a result, hyenas were often drawn to her kill sites. Sadly, she lost several cubs to hyena attacks before they were old enough to recognise the danger and avoid these formidable predators.
An Important Part of the Ecosystem
Although they are often portrayed as villains, spotted hyenas play an essential role in maintaining the balance of the African ecosystem. By scavenging carcasses and hunting weak or vulnerable animals, they help keep the environment clean and healthy.
Watching these misunderstood animals in their natural habitat gave us a greater appreciation for their intelligence, patience, and adaptability. While the lions and leopards may steal the spotlight, the spotted hyenas of Sabi Sands are fascinating creatures in their own right and deserve a closer look.
