Today is all about the teeny tiny pollinators in my garden, the hoverfly. I am still not venturing far from home with the camera but that hasn’t stopped me. I will get back to the birds at some stage but for now I am making the best of what is in my garden. It was great to see some of you taking up the 10 minutes in the garden challenge with me, and I really enjoyed seeing your images. Thank you for sharing them.

Today’s images are of teeny tiny Melangyna novaezlandiae hoverflies which are about the size of a mosquito and could easily be mistaken for one if you didn’t look too closely. The hoverflies attracted our attention when we saw them literally hovering above the flowers. They were so tiny and fast, the camera struggled to see the teeny tiny hoverfly.

Hoverflies are an important part of any garden as they are pollinators. We watched as they gathered pollen much like a honeybee or a bumblebee does, just on a much smaller scale. It’s fascinating to observe even the teeny tiny hoverfly in action.

The hovering was amazing to watch.

This is the only image I managed to capture when the hoverfly was actually hovering above the flower. I love how the sunlight has given the teeny tiny hoverfly a shiny look and allowed the camera to focus solely on the hoverfly.
