The city where I live has streets lined with kowhai trees. In springtime when the kowhai trees are flowering, there is an abundance of natural food for tui. This brings tui out of the bush and into our streets and gardens.
We have two kowhai trees in our small front garden and a large picture window in my dining room looks right at the trees. Right now the kowhai trees are flowering. No matter the weather, I can sit inside photographing the tui drinking the nectar from the kowhai flowers.
These birds have the most incredible colours when the sun shines on them. Unfortunately for most of these images it was raining. I do like how the rain drops roll off their feathers.
When I see the kowhai trees are flowering it signals the start of Spring. With that comes more opportunities to get out into nature and photograph more birds. I hope you enjoy this selection. Let me know if you do, send me a message here.
