Tiritiri Matangi Island

Late last year I booked a trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island for this February.  It has been many years since I visited the island and I had never taken the Lumix G9 there at all.  So I was keen to see how it performed in difficult light and with fast moving birds at the same time. I wasn’t disappointed!  We arrived late morning due the ferry being on a special timetable to accommodate the America’s Cup racing in the harbour, and left at 5.15pm to come home.

I didn’t walk all the tracks as I had set places I wanted to visit and a list of birds I hoped to photograph.  I find it much better to sit and wait for the birds to come to me, so place myself in a strategic place for this to happen.  Usually near a feeder or a water trough.  It was such a hot day both were being frequently used by a variety of birds.

There was a huge number of juvenile birds flitting around, some calling out to their parents demanding to be fed!  The bird song was so loud that even the cicadas were drowned out, I don’t think I have ever been on the island and seen so many birds in such a short space.  I would highly recommend a trip over to Tiritiri Matangi Island if you have an interest in New Zealand’s native birds. I hope you enjoy this selection of images from my day trip.
