North Island Robin / Toutouwai
The sun was shining and the wind was barely noticeable, perfect for a morning at Zealandia Wildlife Sancturary. For me, the highlight of the visit was being in the right place at the right time to see a welfare check on a female robin. The male in the pair had been calling for some time and getting no response, and staff were concerned that something may have happened to the female. Within a few minutes however, the female showed up and was happy to enjoy a tasty feed of meal worms.
We were told that the male would probably share his mealworms with the female, which he eventually did. He was so fast that it was pretty much impossible to capture an image of the event. It was great to learn a little more about these precious little birds by being at the right place at the right time.
Kaka
Kaka are what we saw the most of yesterday at Zealandia Wildlife Sanctuary, there was a lot of preening happening so that is what I focused on the most. There was also a couple of kaka food sharing, like the robins, they were super fast and not in a good position to capture the moment. I did manage to get them together though.
Tui & Fantail / piwakawaka
The last two images I have to share with you today are of a tui that was busy eating bugs on a tree and a little fantail / piwakawaka gathering nesting materials on the path in front of us and I had to be quick to capture these images. The birds were busy and had no intention of waiting for me to finish photographing them.
