Orange-fronted parakeet or kākāriki karaka

There are several different variations of kākāriki. Each is distinguished by the colour of the crown.  The images in this collection are the orange-fronted parakeet or kākāriki karaka which I have only ever seen on protected islands and places like Pūkaha that have captive breeding programs to help boost their numbers. They are the smallest of the kākāriki.

You can assist the Department of Conservation (DOC) to help conserve these small birds by donating to the NZ Nature Fund.
