The White heron/kōtuku is rare in New Zealand. They only breed in one place each year near Whataroa, South Westland, between September and January. This colony is in the Waitangiroto Nature Reserve.  At the end of the breeding season they spread around New Zealand. We are lucky in that we have one that comes back to Petone each year.
