Autumn Birds in the Garden

Silvereye

When the silvereyes have finished nesting and the weather starts to cool, they flock together to hunt for food. The month of May is when we start to see their numbers increase in our garden, and this year is no exception. Yesterday we had a cold frost and which turned into a beautiful sunny but cold day. Our garden had a large number of silvereyes bouncing around the trees.

After so many years of photographing these delightful little birds, it can be hard to get something new in my images. However that doesn’t stop me trying, and the birds are forever giving me new opportunities. They are extremely challenging birds to photograph because they are so fast. If you blink, you have missed the shot.

Yesterday’s exercise was to find different poses with the best background. Looking out my window there are some green trees in the garden of the house across the road. These trees give me a beautiful soft background as they are so far away, and when the sun shines I get beautiful soft bokeh. I like to choose my background before I start with the camera to ensure it is clean and will show off the bird to its best.

The next trick of course is to wait for the bird to land exactly where I want it to. This can take a while, and yesterday a while was about an hour before I was consistently getting the birds where I wanted them. This set of images are not all fully in focus, but that is not what I was aiming for. I wanted something new and different from past images. I hope you enjoy these as much as I enjoyed photographing them.
