November Road Trip with a Group of Photographers

It sounds very decadent, flying to Brisbane just for the weekend, and it was, but I got to spend some quality time with my son and grandsons, and the birds in their back yard.
The tui are still visiting our garden, even after the kowhai flowers are finished. The red-hot pokers are still providing nectar for them to drink.
October is my favourite month to photograph the birds in my garden. It is generally when most of the local kowhai trees have finished flowering and our trees come into bloom.
Yesterday at Pukaha National Wildlife Centre, I managed to tick another bird off my wish list. Before now I had never seen a orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka and it wasn’t from lack of effort.
Continuing on from my last post about attracting birds into the garden, I can now tell you that after two weeks of work around the garden, I have almost instant success. We have had a few trees removed after being damaged in the strong winds, and have pruned back some others allowing for more bird friendly plants.
I don’t always have the time or the energy to go out looking for birds to photograph all the time, but I still want my camera fix as often as possible. So, I have a cunning solution. I get the birds to come to me!
Our kowhai trees are still in bud and yet to flower, so the tui are off elsewhere at the moment. A friend and fellow photographer told me they were going crazy over her kowhai tree yesterday, so I jumped in the car, camera in hand, to pay her a visit.
Last week I flew to Auckland for the announcement of the new G9II, and to return the one I had been using for the last month…
Another month has passed without my posting very much on my blog, but this time there is a very special reason. I was busy playing with a new toy!
