kākāriki karaka
Yesterday at Pukaha National Wildlife Centre, I managed to tick another bird off my wish list. Before now I had never seen a orange-fronted parakeet/kākāriki karaka and it wasn’t from lack of effort.

After a month recuperating from a health issue, I am finally able to get back out and about with my camera. I decided that the red-crowned kakariki would be my target bird for the outing, so we headed to Nga Manu.
It’s Friday again and as usual, the day is devoted to the camera and getting out into Nature. Our destination this week was Ngā Manu Nature Reserve in Waikanae.
I try and keep Friday’s free for a day of photography. It is one of the benefits of being self-employed. This week’s plan was a visit to Pūkaha where I photographed the riflemen last year. I was hoping to find a nesting pair again this year, but that didn’t happen on this visit. What I did manage to photograph there for the first time, was the yellow crowned kākāriki.
Ever since I moved to the Wellington Region, I have wanted to go to Kapiti Island. I am not sure why it has taken nearly 23 years to do it, but thanks to a Hutt Camera Club field trip, I finally got there. Of course now I wish I had gone earlier and often! Everywhere …
Late last year I booked a trip to Tiritiri Matangi Island for this February. It has been many years since I visited the island and I had never taken the Lumix G9 there at all. So I was keen to see how it performed in difficult light and with fast moving birds at the same …
Last Friday a fellow photographer and I traveled to Havelock North. On the way there we stopped off at the Pūkaha National Wildlife Centre where we spent a couple of hours wandering around the tracks, enjoying the bush and the birds. We enjoyed it so much that we stopped off there again today on …
I spent the morning at Zealandia with a fellow photog yesterday. We were surprised at how many people there were there! Several school groups with guides, and several guided tours for tourists (I am assuming they are NZ tourists enjoying Wellington). We did a walk to the kaka feeders and back before having lunch and …
A recent visit to Zealandia to look for the riflemen that are so hard to find, resulted in some lovely kakariki images. These little parrots just love millet and there is a feeding station at Zealandia where they can often find a millet spray or two. I remember when they were first released into the …
My membership had expired, so when it was suggested that we head to Zealandia this morning I figured it was a great opportunity to renew my membership. The benefits of being a member are awesome, I can go as often as I like and if I want to take anyone with me (who isn’t a …
