On our way North we stopped by the gannet colony at Muriwai (these will be the subjects of my next post) and I was very surprised to see nesting white-fronted terns in between the gannets on a steep bank. Unfortunately I didn’t have my extender with me so these are crops and not the best quality images but they record what I saw and I was super impressed to have seen them.
Watching the parent bird fly in with the fish in its beak and then tease the chick with it. The chick had to chase after the parent to even get a look in. The whole time I was there I didn’t see a single chick getting fed but I know it must happen. These birds seem to like holding on to their catch as long as they can! Then I of course was also distracted by the gannets and a brown boobie that was also there.
